Meal plan: Bed & Breakfast

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is probably one of the least visited of the northern Tanzanian game parks, and retains a real air of undiscovered Africa, particularly in the south of the park. Just two hours drive away from Arusha. It lies a little distance to the southeast of Lake Manyara and covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers. It is named after the Tarangire River that flows through the park. The swamps, tinged green year-round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the largest number of species in one habitat anywhere in the world; on drier ground, the Kori bustard – the heaviest flying bird – can be found. The huge mobs of elephants are easily encountered in any season.

Enjoy the first day of your safari with game drives in this unique national park where mighty baobab – the tree of life – tower majestically over the savannah can be seen.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: EcoScience Camp/ Tarangire Safari Lodge.

Night game drives are also available where you can see nocturnal animals such as civets, genets, aardvarks, bush babies, and various night birds. (Optional Activity: US$125 per person, inclusive of Tanzania National Parks night game drive fees.)

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park

After a leisurely breakfast, head in the direction of Lake Manyara for a game drive. Lake Manyara is a soda lake at the Great Rift Valley, known for the migratory pink flamingos.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: Tloma Lodge

Day 4: Ngorongoro crater tour:

Leave very early in the morning for game viewing in Ngorongoro Crater. Descend into the Ngorongoro caldera to view the wildlife on the crater floor. “The Ngorongoro Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World’.

A massive extinct volcano, the sheet walls drop thousands of feet to a “Noah’s Ark” of animals on the verdant floor below. Large herds of zebra, buffalo, antelope, and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist.

The world-famous Ngorongoro Crater is at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania. Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera of the once-volcanic Ngorongoro shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth, 10 days Private Guided Tanzania, ringed with towering walls and sheltering forests, grasslands, fresh springs and a large soda lake.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

Day 5: Transfer to Serengeti National Park

You can have an optional stop at Olduvai Gorge where the hominid and other significant archaeological discoveries have been made. (US$40 per person, subject to change without notice.) Explore the Serengeti savannahs and woodlands, boasting the largest mass of free-ranging animals on earth. Drive to your camp for dinner and overnight.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: Katikati Tented Camp

Day 6: Full Day in Serengeti National Park (Central)

There is no bad time to visit the Serengeti as every season has its own special highlight – even the rainy season has the daily thunder and lightning to look forward to. Changing seasons and light patterns form the most beautiful backdrop to view Africa’s majestic and incredible wildlife.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: Katikati Tented Camp

Day 7: Serengeti National Park: Seronera – Kogatende area:

Early morning breakfast then depart for game drives at the northern Serengeti near Masai Mara and Serengeti border.

This is the long dry season and the wildebeest migration is moving north with the thundershowers. August is time for the Wildebeest annual rut (mating) and this generally happens in Masai Mara and in the very North of the Serengeti National Park in an area called Kogatende. But, before reaching the mating grounds the Mara River needs to be crossed and this provides for some amazing wildlife viewing.

Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest can congregate at crossing points: all crossing in a single continuous wave of beasts. And all this while tooth and claw are waiting around the sides to pick off the weak and the careless.

Besides the amazing wildlife in Kogatende another very positive feature is that there are very few lodges and camps here so all the viewing can happen with few others around.

Enjoy evening game drives with your expert guide then drive to your camp for dinner and overnight.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: Chaka Camp

Day 8-9: Full day at Kogatende area:

Early morning breakfast and then depart for full-day game drives in Kogatende with your expert guide.

Many visitors only want to see the river crossings but the true spectacle of the migration is more than 1,245,000 wildebeests, 200,000 Burchell’s zebras, 18,000 elands and 500,000 Thomson’s Gazelles filling the entire stretch of landscape. The shifting columns of the herds as they traverse the valleys and the hills can only be watched in awe. There is nothing else like this on earth.

Meal plan: Full Board

Accommodation: Chaka Camp

Day 10: Kogatende to Arusha then Kilimanjaro Airport:

After breakfast, you will be dropped off at Kogatende Airstrip for your flight back to Arusha. If time permits, you can have lunch (at your own expense) in Arusha town, before transferring to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO).
